Principal Animal Technician, Animal Resources Supervisor of Animal Care Program
Under direction of the Animal Resources Supervisor of Animal Care Program, incumbent is assigned responsibility for supervising limited technical and environmental control activities in physically separate or organizationally distinct animal care areas within vivaria. Incumbent must ensure that animal housing and care are compatible with all federal, state and local requirements as well as accreditation standards of AAALAC International. (Husbandry Efficacy); and achieve maximal efficiency in resources used for animal housing and care (Husbandry Efficiency). Departmental Mission is to support researchers in use of their animals. This requires continued and effective communications with the Animal Resources Supervisor, investigators and laboratory staff, as well as health and office units within department. Maintain animal records related to health and administration. Management of multi-species facility includes operation and proper utilization of advanced rodent housing units to accommodate colonies of transgenic rodents within vivarium. Equipment includes automatic ventilated cages, autoclaves, biosafety cabinets and cage washers. Incumbent typically makes work assignments to, and adjust workload of two or more full time animal care personnel; train these staff members; evaluate employee performance; makes or effectively recommends employment and termination decisions; estimates and initiates orders for animals, supplies and equipment; ensures compliance with health and safety regulations; and perform other related duties as required. --Able to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as necessary to fulfill job requirements.

--Must possess a CA Driver's License to drive between facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Demonstrated ability and knowledge to train employees in proper procedures and methods involved in caring for animals.
* Ability to organize own work schedule and those of supervised employees according to established priorities. Ability to exercise diplomacy/flexibility in interacting with a diverse group of scientists, engaged in medical research and teaching.
* Ability to use judgment and common sense to solve problems associated with vivarium operations.
* Ability to operate PC's (including printers) with skill in Windows, Outlook, Word, Access, and Excel or other software packages used by the department.
* Familiarity with NIH guidelines for Animal Biosafety Facilities (ABSL 1-3) and personnel safety requirements.
* Knowledge of veterinary and human medical terminology. Knowledge of behavior and care needs of common laboratory animals. Skill to recognize normal and abnormal body functions and vital signs in a variety of laboratory animals. Knowledge of nutritional needs of laboratory animals including preparation of special diets.
* Skill to operate and maintain mechanical equipment, autoclaves, cage washers, vehicles, janitorial equipment such as floor scrubbers.
* Skilled in the administration of medications: oral, topical, and injectable. Skilled in technical procedure i.e.: Tissue collection and organ removal. Skilled in clinical diagnostic laboratory specimen collection techniques.
* Work in biohazardous areas, with biological, chemical and radioactive hazards.
* Skilled in the humane methods of euthanasia in laboratory animals.
**PREFERRED**
* Knowledge of rules and regulations pertaining to animal care including knowledge of UCSD policies and procedures regarding care and use of animals.
* Familiarity with operating procedures for UCSD animal vivaria, particularly special facilities transgenic animals, immune compromised animals, and rodent breeding management.
* Knowledge of laws and regulations that govern housing and management of laboratory animals as applied to the University of California.
