Feeds and waters animals. Performs routine animal care maintenance including attaching ID bands and general grooming. Handles and restrains animals according to instructions and protocol. Maintains routine record keeping of such items as environmental conditions and animal inventory. Observes and communicates animal health conditions to lab personnel and notifies supervisor of abnormal conditions. Distributes supplies to various research areas. May be responsible for euthanasia; limited anesthesia; physical exams and administering medication according to veterinary direction. Mon - Fri 8am to 5pm. Apply

The Veterinary Service Center within the Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking an Animal Care Assistant to provide basic care and husbandry for a variety of animal species (including mice, rats, and any other species as directed by supervisor). The responsibilities include cleaning and changing animal cages per the standard operating procedures, instructions on researchers’ protocol, U.S.D.A. and NIH guidelines, and any other University and outside government requirements. Perform routine husbandry techniques, such as breeding and maintaining strains of mice or other animals. Observe and record signs of unusual appearance, behavior, illness, or death in animals; complete and maintain forms as required; administer pre-measured medications according to instructions; obtain routine diagnostic specimens from animals, i.e., blood for viral serologies; keep accurate and complete records on animal inventories and activities; comply with governmental regulations and University policies regarding health and safety and observe and support good health and safety practices.
