The Veterinary Service Center within the Department of Comparative Medicine is seeking an Animal Care Assistant to provide basic care and husbandry for a variety of animal species (including mice, rats, and any other species as directed by supervisor). The responsibilities include cleaning and changing animal cages per the standard operating procedures, instructions on researchers’ protocol, U.S.D.A. and NIH guidelines, and any other University and outside government requirements. Perform routine husbandry techniques, such as breeding and maintaining strains of mice or other animals. Observe and record signs of unusual appearance, behavior, illness, or death in animals; complete and maintain forms as required; administer pre-measured medications according to instructions; obtain routine diagnostic specimens from animals, i.e., blood for viral serologies; keep accurate and complete records on animal inventories and activities; comply with governmental regulations and University policies regarding health and safety and observe and support good health and safety practices. QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have one year of applicable animal care experience in a research or animal laboratory setting; prefer certification at the AALAS technician level or equivalent training; familiarity with NIH and U.S.D.A. guidelines. Must possess mechanical ability, manual dexterity, and personal standards of cleanliness, neatness and organizational ability. Must be able to read, write, understand, communicate and follow written and oral instructions provided in English. Must be capable of properly handling and restraining all species of common laboratory animals, have no abnormal fear of any common laboratory species and should be free of animal-related allergies. The candidate selected for this position will complete an Occupational Health Surveillance Questionnaire and may be required to undergo a physical examination and immunizations.
